Similar interest in engaging the South African film market is developing, albeit not yet to the extent of China’s interest in Hollywood. The highest-ranking production (estimated earning $852 million) in China for 2017 was “Wolf Warrior 2” – it was filmed in parts of South Africa, including in Durban, Soweto and Alexandra. The action film centres on a war hero who defends medical aid workers in a fictitious African country. At a local movie reception, Ambassador Lin Songtian of the Chinese embassy in South Africa, described it as 'an excellent Chinese film that carries forward patriotic enthusiasm and friendship between China and Africa'. South Africa hosted the third BRICS Film Festival, which coincides with its hosting of the tenth BRICS Summit in July.

Caroline Hau, a prominent Japan-based scholar of overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia, notes the intimate link between the changing representations of Chinese and China in cultural products in the Philippines and the rise of PRC. She notes the popularity of films and TV shows portraying Filipino-Chinese as well as their networks in China in a positive light. This is a recent change considering that many of the cultural products on the Filipino-Chinese and their families in China tend to portray them negatively or stereotypically. Elite families, especially the Filipino-Chinese, have also put up cultural shows (exhibits, gallery, etc.) showing/discovering/tracing their roots to mainland China. In short, Hau generally finds evidence that the rising strength of PRC spurred a revival of Chineseness in the Philippines including in culture.

There is no clear evidence of a trend that the Taiwanese cultural products are portraying China in a positive way. However, many Taiwanese artists have the need and pressure to work in China. Even when they participate in the Taiwanese TV or movie production, they can still be censored and pressured by Chinese authority and public. Also, since Taiwan and China use almost the same language, people can easily watch Chinese cultural production through TV stations purchasing Chinese TV shows or through online platforms.

There are no Chilean productions so far portraying the PRC in a positive or a negative way. They don’t even mention the PRC. The only exception to this would be the content related to Pablo Neruda, (such as the 2016 movie), as we went to the PRC several times (1951-1957), and had a high esteem of Mao Zedong. There are no Chilean productions so far portraying the PRC in a positive or a negative way. There is film project set on the Pacific War between Chile and Peru around the 1880’s, about Chinese slaves liberated by the Chilean army. This is a coproduction in development since 2018, with financing from Chilean and Chinese companies (no much details were found about the Chinese producers), but apparently COVID-19 paused the production. There was another project from 2017, but there is no information if the project went beyond a short trailer (link #4) The movie project called “El Color de las Cerezas” (The Color of Cherries), tells the story of a Chinese man who falls in love with a young woman at a Chilean farm.

A major think tank concluded that opinions on China are 'unfavorable and deteriorating', no examples prove otherwise. There is a succesful documentary series (4 series, 20+ 45-minute episodes) by journalist Ruben Terlou who travels through China. He acknowledges that he can't be too negative about the PCR regime in order to keep doing his work, but definitely doesn't paint a positive picture of the PCR government. This is the most extreme situation one can find in the country

Local production of cultural products such as films and TV shows is at the moment very modest. In addition to that, it doesn’t typically reflect or is connected to portrayals of China or Chinese people. Therefore, the question cannot be answered with yes nor with no.

PRC rarely features in cultural products produced in Serbia. If it did, it is more likely than not that it would be portrayed in a positive light. However, as it stands, both 'yes' and 'no' would seem like incorrect answers in this situation.

According to the expert's knowledge, PRC generally, is portrayed positively with the country, but the direct evidence can not be found. Interestingly, pro-Chinese propaganda was promoted extensively by state actors as diplomats and state television rather than the expected proponents of Russian propaganda. The same narrative has been spread in Belarus as in the other countries of the EaP, namely, the humanitarian aid of China to countries facing COVID-19 outbreaks. Link
