The Indicators have been classified by the stage of the influence process at which they occur. Some Indicators correspond to exposure to PRC influence, e.g. the presence of Confucius Institutes. Others test for pressure – such as visa denials to academics or journalists. Finally, some Indicators capture the effect of PRC influence, such as national policy changes in favor of PRC interests.
The individual Layer scores for each country are tallied and displayed via rankings.

In 2023, Bangladesh had a GDP per capita of US$2,529 and a total estimated population of 170.43 million people, with the Chinese population comprising an estimated 100,000 people.
Bangladesh established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China in 1976. Bangladesh was ranked 165th in Reporters Without Borders’ 2024 World Press Freedom Index, and rated Partly Free in Freedom House‘s 2024 Global Freedom Index, with a score of 40/100.
Key Takeaways
- The Chinese embassy in Bangladesh is the source of many activities that exert China's soft power on Bangladeshi society.
- Bangladesh adheres to the “one-China principle” and firmly supports China on issues related to China's stance on its internal affairs such as Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Tibet.
- Visits of politicians, bureaucrats and members of armed forces resumed in 2023 after a ban on foreign visits due to austerity measures.
Percentage scores do not suggest some degree out of a “completely influenced” level of 100%. The percentages express the country‘s score out of the total achievable amount based on the Indicators for each Domain.
