The editor of HS tried to defend its decision by claiming that social marketing falls under freedom of speech but it was very controversial among HS staff members and concerned segments of the wider public. In July 2021, HS and three other mainstream Nordic newspapers printed on their frontpage a common message of solidarity with Hong Kong's media freedom. No new evidence is available however.
