In 2023, Nicaragua had a GDP per capita of US$2,530 with a total population of 6.78 million people, of which an estimated 3,000 are Chinese.
Nicaragua established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China in 1985, but later President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro switched recognition to Taiwan in 1990. In 2021, Nicaragua switched diplomatic relations from Taiwan to the PRC. Nicaragua was ranked 163rd in Reporters Without Borders' 2024 World Press Freedom Index, and rated Not Free in Freedom House‘s 2024 Global Freedom Index, with a score of 16/100.
