The Indicators have been classified by the stage of the influence process at which they occur. Some Indicators correspond to exposure to PRC influence, e.g. the presence of Confucius Institutes. The individual Layer scores for each country are tallied and displayed via rankings.

In 2023, South-Korea had a GDP per capita of US$33,121 and a total population of 51.76 million people.
South-Korea established full diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China in 1992. South-Korea was ranked 62nd in Reporters Without Borders‘ 2024 World Press Freedom Index, and rated Free in Freedom House‘s 2024 Global Freedom Index, with a score of 83/100.
Key Takeaways
- In the Media Domina, Kpop-style idols from China are among the most prominent denying human rights violations in China. They often take a pro-China stance on Chinese social media on issues such as Hong Kong and Xinjiang. However, on Korean social media, they usually avoid this.
- Even though both countries expressed a desire to improve relations, South Korea supports Hong Kong's independence. The Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs also emphasized 'the need to resolve disputes peacefully through freedom of navigation and dialogue in the South China Sea." South Korea is also crticial of China over Xinjiang and Hong Kong. But in the case of Tibet, South Korea remain silent.
- In academia, Koreans account for 70% of the global total taking the Chinese Language Proficiency Test (HSK), and have been ranked first by country for the past several years.
- South Korea's domestic politics are also affected by bilateral relations between China and South Korea. China and Korea have also established good cooperation covering BRI, exchanges between companies and cultural cooperation. There are also sister city or sister province cooperation arrangments that have been established between South Korea and China; Shanghai has established sister-city cooperation with Busan, for example.
- Even though there has been an increase in South Korea's economic relations with the United States, China is still number one trading partner for South Korea. Shinhan Bank, af South Korean branches financial firm, participates in the CIPS system, and a Free Trade Area exists between the two countries.
- In the Technology Domain, South Korea is considering the BeiDou satellite navigation system for adoption is unlikely due to security concerns.
- Even though Chinese dramas have quite high popularity in South Korea, Korean citizens, along with other countries, held a negative view of China, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Percentage scores do not suggest some degree out of a “completely influenced” level of 100%. The percentages express the country‘s score out of the total achievable amount based on the Indicators for each Domain.

In 2019, dozens of Korean and Chinese students glared at each other for over four hours in the first floor lobby of the College of Humanities at Hanyang University in Seongdong-gu, Seoul. It started around 1 p.m. when about 10 members of this school's 'Student Group for Promoting the Truth About Hong Kong' posted two posters expressing support for the Hong Kong protests. Five Chinese students passing by began protesting about this. They immediately rushed to remove the poster and engaged in a physical fight, bumping shoulders and pushing and pulling with the Korean students. Instead of taking off the poster, the Chinese students stuck notes on the poster with the five-star red flag (Chinese flag), 'Long live Kim Jong-un', and 'Dokdo is Japanese territory'. Still, the confrontation continued. The number of Chinese students increased over time, reaching about 40 at 5 p.m. The standoff ended when a security guard intervened.

In July 2015, a naval officer belonging to the Armed Forces Security Command (currently the Military Security Support Command) was arrested and indicted on charges of leaking military secrets to China. According to the 2016 Supreme Court ruling (2016Do11677 decision), the materials handed over by this naval officer included THAAD-related materials. According to the prosecution's indictment, this naval officer received the data from another officer who had the data under the pretext of using it for educational and research purposes, then took pictures and handed them over to the Chinese (the court ruled that this was an attempt). He even provided Chinese explanations by hand.
