In October 2017, China Unicom completed the PCCW 2M project, establishing the China–Myanmar International (CMI) cable and connecting it to the Asia–Africa–Europe 1 (AAE-1) cable. This marked the first time a Chinese domestic operator fully constructed an overseas optical cable project. The CMI cable, aimed at boosting Myanmar's telecommunication capacity, was preceded by the completion of the China–Myanmar International terrestrial cable in 2014. To facilitate this connection, the Ngwe Saung Cable Landing Station was built, linking China Unicom's AAE-1 submarine cable to the CMI cable, creating a digital link from China to Europe.
