In response to Lithuania's 2021 review of its relationship with China, Beijing embarked on a multi-dimensional pressure campaign against the country. This included informational attacks against Lithuania, its current government, and its representatives. Therefore, this indicator deserves a "More than a few" and "Significant" rating.

Criticisms and harassment based on falsehoods were deployed by the Chinese side regarding the discharge of treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Therefore, this Indicator deserves an "Significant" rating.

A parliamentary researcher close to the Foreign Affairs Committee chairlady, Alicia Kearns, who is known to be critical of the CCP, was arrested in 2023 on allegations that he was spying for China. Later that year, the Chinese Foreign Ministry criticised a report from the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, chaired by Kearns, which referred to Taiwan as an 'independent country' for the first time in an official document. MFA spokesperson Wang Wenbin criticised it for 'reversing right and wrong' and urged the British parliament to adhere to the 'one China' principle. In 2021, five Conservative MPs were sanctioned by China for their criticism of Beijing's treatment of Uyghurs in Xinjiang. To this day, the sanctions are still active and restricts the MPs' ability to travel to China. Thus, there are 'More than a few' cases. Since all of the reported cases are significant, the 'Significant' rating is justified.

The Chinese ambassador in Australia criticised a bipartisan group of Australian politicians who visited Taiwan in September 2023. The ambassador argued that visiting Taiwan may provide support to Taiwan's movement for independence and potentially depart from Australia's One China policy. The same ambassador had, in 2022, proclaimed that China would use 'all necessary means' to prevent Taiwan from being independent in a fiery speech. China's Global Times have described the Australian MPs participating in the tour as 'political gods of plague and pestilence' (政治瘟神). Such strong language from a state media outlet and the seniority of the ambassador's position justify a 'Significant' rating. In 2019, two Liberal MPs, James Paterson and Andrew Hastie, had their visa applications for a study tour to China rejected by the PRC. They were told they could only enter China if they 'genuinely repent' for their comments.

Current ambassador Niu Qingbao, provided a "warning" by proxy to president Gabriel Boric when he conducted a private meeting with local likeminded parliamentary members before the executive figure travelled to China. Therefore, this indicator deserves a "significant" rating, with "few" cases.

Danish NGO "Alliance of Democracies", headed by former Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, has been sanctioned by the PRC since 2021. Moreover, two Danish MPs (as well as two youth politicians), who helped political activist Ted Hui flee Hong Kong in late 2020 have been warned (by the Danish authorities) not to travel to countries that might be willing to extradite them to the Chinese authorities (based on confidential information that the PRC has been preparing a lawsuit against these politicians). The two MPs have also had their computers hacked by the PRC back in 2021.

The late President of the Senate Jaroslav Kubera was harassed over his plans to visit Taiwan. The pressure was channeled through Czech politicians including president Zeman, and business (mainly PPF), but also the PRC embassy in Prague. The pressure was incredibly strong and President Kubera died before traveling to Taiwan, reportedly due to the tremendous stress, just after seeing a PRC ambassador. The event had a substantial impact on the further development of Czech politics, as it led Kubera’s successor Miloš Vystrčil to double-down on his intention to visit Taiwan. The PRC officials harassed Hsiao Bi-khim, the then Taiwanese vice president elect, who was visiting Prague in March 2024. While she was escorted from the airport to the hotel, the PRC military attaché was chasing her in a car and nearly caused the car crash. Although she is a Taiwanese politician, she was about to meet Czech politicians and was receiving the protection from Czech police, so this can be interpreted as a form of harassment.

In December 2023, Senator JV Ejercito claimed that China might be funding destabilization efforts in the Philippines through "trolls" with “pro-Beijing” stance amid the territorial dispute in the South China Sea. Among the victim of coordinated social media attacks were him, Senate President Migz Zubiri, House Speaker Martin Romualdez, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., and Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson for West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela. With the few number of government officials involved, therefore, this Indicator deserves a “Few” rating. These are high-level government officials who are vocal in condemning China in their actions amid the tension in the Indo-Pacific region. Therefore, this Indicator deserves a “Significant” rating.
Supplementary Notes
Among these Philippine government officials, it was Commodore Jay Tarriela, the Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson for West Philippine Sea (South China Sea), who was the most harassed online. In December, he was tagged by various personalities, including reported China-funded propagandists, to be a covert agent of the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States for allegedly parroting the stand of the US in condemning China in its hostility in the South China Sea. Back in October, he had an “academic word war” with Zhou Bo, a retired military official of China’s People’s Liberation Army, during a session in the 15th South China Sea International Conference in Ho Chi Minh City. 1) Link 2) Link

PRC official and quasi-official media (e.g., Global Times) have in the past criticized Singapore leaders. However, this has become less common following the South China Sea Arbitral Tribunal decision and Singapore's relative quiet after the detention of its armored vehicles in Hong Kong. The most recent criticism was not directed at a politician but at the Singapore government for extending congratulations to Lai Ching-te on his election as the next president of Taiwan. The criticism was made by PRC Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning and carried by media outlets. Additionally, magazines in the PRC have published generated images of container ships armed with missiles attacking what appears to be the Singapore port.

China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Wang Wenbin, expressed strong dissatisfaction over the armed conflict resulting in Chinese casualties. Beijing has made solemn representations to the relevant parties. Wang demanded an immediate cessation of hostilities amid the northern Myanmar conflict and urged practical measures to prevent further incidents jeopardizing border peace. He emphasized China's commitment to taking necessary measures to protect its citizens' lives and property. Such expression is considered as insignificant as the experts believe that such expression is made as a part of diplomatic briefing and in practice, the PRC still maintain a warm and good relationship with the military regime and ethnic armed groups in the border area though there are reported news of putting pressures on these groups by the PRC.

Supplementary Notes
It is very difficult to find some kind of critics, harras or threat made by PRC officials agaisnt any politician (including opposition leaders) in Venezuela. PRC officials used to be assertive implementing its foreign policy toward Venezuela. In this sense, PRC officials use the "no interference in internal affairs" principle to maintain some kind of neutrality in venezuelan politial environment.
