This has not occurred in Colombia, partly given very little interest in Colombian academic institutions on East Asian history, issues of concern to China, etc. Even universities that have Confucius Institutes in them have not been known to change their curriculum. A likely reason is that Colombian academic institutions have a strong, long-lasting, and legally-protected principle of upholding the freedom of professors/teachers to choose the content of their classes. Not even higher-level university officials can interfere in these individual choices.

The Foreign Affairs Committee published a report in 2019, discussing “autocracies’ influence on academic freedom in the UK” with significant reference to the PRC. The report identified efforts to influence curricula but didn’t identify involvement as outlined in the question above. There are questions over compromise in other respects (the possibility of self-censorship where institutions are dependent on Chinese student tuition fees, for example) but they do not amount to involvement as described here. This is a question where further evidence may become apparent in future studies – from the Confucius classroom scheme, for example.

Some respondents quote billboards and television commercials, encouraging Uzbek youth to study in China. The number of Uzbek students in China increased from 74 in 2002 to over 4,000 in 2017 (external Chinese policy, 2002–2017). An increasing number Uzbek students also receive scholarships for Chinese governments to subsidize education.153 For example, only for the period from 2010 to 2018 the Chinese government has provided 1,000 scholarships for students from Uzbekistan (website Embassy of China in Uzbekistan). However, the participants surveys indicate that students can choose to study in China even without a scholarship, because for them it is an opportunity study in English at an affordable price and get internationally recognized diploma and work in Chinese companies.- Link

The connection is indirect: Italian academics who have autonomy over the design of curricula are hired en-masse by Confucius Institutes (~16 in Italy) and it is possible that PRC exerts influence over them in an informal way. There has been no official contestation of the sort in the public sphere, but when the majority of China scholars in the country are also somehow paid by the PRC, some invisible influence is possible
