There are two official Confucius Institutes in Georgia. The first one opened in 2010 at the Free University of Tbilisi and the other one in 2017 at the Tbilisi Open University. It is not officially opened as a CI at the Batumi State University (BSU), but there has been an agreement between the two institutions offering students free Chinese language courses since 2017. The information available on the BSU webpage specifically says that the cooperation agreement between the BSU and the CI is not limited to coaching in the Chinese language and involves teaching a variety of other subjects. In 2018, the Confucius Institute started offering special free language programs to students of the largest and most popular Tbilisi State University with the opportunity of continuing free education in China. By 2019, there were at least 29 Confucius Institutes in the UK according to the Conservative Party Human Rights Commission (CPHRC) report into Confucius Institutes in the UK (and repeated in a report on UK-China ties in higher education by The Policy Institute at King’s College London and the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the Harvard Kennedy School). The CPHRC report states that this was at the time “the second largest number in the world after the United States” and that the Confucius Institutes are connected to many major higher education institutions “such as Edinburgh, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Cardiff and University College London”. The report also states that there were, at the time, 148 Confucius classrooms in the UK.

There are Confucius Institutes in the premier Philippine universities including University of the Philippines and Ateneo De Manila University. There are also Cis in top regional universities including the Ateneo De Davao University, Bulacan State University, and Angeles University Foundation in Pampanga. More universities are planning to set up one including the Mariano Marcos State University. Cis are influential in the Chinese language education and training in the country. For instance, Cis in universities are used as a platform to train language teachers from grade school to college as well as sponsor study trips of Filipino students to China.

There are two Confucius Institutes in BiH: One opened by the University in Sarajevo (link), the other by the University in Banja Luka (link). Both Institutes hold various activities, one of which is free Mandarin lessons. The Institute in Banja Luka even hosts competitions, and publishes some lessons about the Chinese culture online in the forms of videos, which makes them widely accessible. This Institute holds more activities and works to connect Serbian and Chinese cultures through better promotion. Lessons held at the University of Banja Luka regarding the Chinese history and culture were even broadcasted on Republika Srpska’s television RTRS (25 years of diplomatic relations between PCR and BiH, 2020, p.95). Thus being said, the Institute in Banja Luka shows significant importance, compared to the Sarajevo Institute.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Zambia is a very visible structure, and it stands out due to its imposing and attractive physical state, compared to the rest of the University. It is also a hub of learning Mandarin in Zambia, thought it should be noted that the first Chinese school in Zambia was opened in 2009, with donations from the Chinese Embassy and the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. As per 2020, there are 6 Confucius Institute in various regions of Indonesia. The presence of the institute has so far been successful, especially in approaching Islamic Institutions as language courses and Chinese culture exposure have been warmly welcomed in each institution. However, they were do not play such a significant role as some Indonesian university had already offered mandarin courses even before China’s Confucius Institute initiative. In 2011, Hasanuddin University in South Sulawesi collaborated with Nanchang University in China’s Jiangxi province to establish an institute , which actively carried out student exchange programs between Indonesia and China. It is reported that from 2011 to 2015, Hasanuddin University sent 2,000 students to China. Confucius Institutes have also been founded elsewhere, including at Maranatha Christian University in Bandung, Al-Azhar Indonesia University in Jakarta, Tanjungpura University in West Kalimantan, Surabaya State University in Surabaya, and Muhammadiyah Malang University in East Java.

There are three Confucius Institutes in Colombia, two in the capital Bogota and one in Medellin. There are also five Confucius Classrooms in the country. The Institutes and Classrooms have entered into agreements with other academic and state entities to teach Chinese language and culture to non-traditional students. It’s been known that the Institutes are especially attractive for students at the initial levels of Chinese learning, but that few continue on beyond the second level, pointing to limited influence. In some universities, like Universidad de los Andes, the Japanese Center does not only attract more attention but even has a bigger building across from the Confucius Institute; this particular Institute has not had a Chinese director for years.

We have found three Confucius Institutes/Classrooms - namely in Dhaka University, North South University and Shanto-Mariam University. The the first Confucius Institute in Dhaka was established in 2006 in collaboration with North South University and the Chinese Yunnan University. There is one Confucius Institute at Vilnius University (since 2010) and two Confucius Classrooms in Vilnius and Kaunas, the country's two largest cities. Vilnius University signed a new cooperation agreement with East China Normal University in 2021 (shedding its former relationship with Liaoning University), but none of the representatives of the new partner institution has even arrived to Lithuania due to the pandemic at the time of this writing. There is no evidence of any adverse impact of the Confucius Institute for Vilnius University or the country at large, and a telling test for Chinese influence over the former came when its authorities organized a widely-attended public lecture by the visiting Dalai Lama in mid-2018.

In October 2020, Austria’s first Confucius Classroom was established in Weiz (State of styria) in cooperation with the Confucius Institute at the University of Graz.
