At least five interviewees explained the lack of reporting on Xinjiang issues as stemming from fear of damaging cooperation with the Embassy. Interviewee 3, a PRC Embassy officer, offered equipment and financial support to local media in exchange for managing Xinjiang narratives: "They said if we write about Uyghurs, we should consult with them." These cooperation agreements facilitated by the Embassy are crucial. At least five interviewees attributed the lack of reporting on Xinjiang issues to concerns about jeopardizing these partnerships.

The Chinese Embassy in Israel issued a statement on February 8th, 2022, expressing "strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition" to "anti-China articles" about the Winter Olympics published in the Jerusalem Post. The Chinese spokesperson implied that there were "forces...behind this author," alluding to the United States. This statement was highly contentious and went against the independence of the press, which is highly valued in Israel, but it was not widely discussed in the country. When asked about the incident, a senior Israeli editor stated that the embassy had the right to complain, but it appeared they were "trying to intimidate" Israeli journalists. In May 2022, Yaakov Katz, the editor of the Jerusalem Post, stated that after publishing an interview with Taiwan's foreign minister, Joseph Wu, he received an angry call from a senior diplomat at the Chinese embassy in Tel Aviv, who threatened to downgrade relations with Israel unless the story was removed. Katz immediately tweeted about the threat, writing on May 30th, 2022: "Needless to say, story ain’t going anywhere." This was not the first time Katz had heard from the embassy, having received a complaint earlier in May over an op-ed by an exiled Uyghur leader and counter-op-eds by embassy representatives to editorials published in 2021 that were critical of China or its impact on Israel’s relations with the United States.

In July 2020, popular morning talk show host Avri Gilad delivered a live monologue acknowledging the 21st anniversary of the CCP's campaign against the Falun Gong spiritual practice, as local adherents were planning a protest in front of the Chinese embassy that day. Gilad also spoke about organ transplant abuses in China and broadly commented on the repressive nature of the regime. The Chinese embassy apparently saw the clip and quickly sent a letter of complaint, which Gilad then read on air in an effort to expose the attempt to influence his commentary. Link

There have been cases of pressure exerted on journalists by the PRC in South Africa, though the most prominent example falls outside the recent time frame. While a notable incident occurred prior to 2022, involving a columnist at Independent Media losing his column after writing about Uyghur abuses, no examples within the current timeframe were found.

There are journalists who have had pressure exerted on them by Vietnam itself. Writing for independent media channels such as BBC Vietnamese is disapproved by the Vietnamese government, it can lead to various problems and even incarceration in extreme cases. Due to the close ties between the Vietnamese and Chinese Communist parties, it is possible that the pressure on these Vietnamese journalists can extend to China.

While there have been no documented cases in my country, journalists have experienced pressure exerted by the People's Republic of China (PRC), which includes public denunciation, revocation of journalist identification, denial of visas, lawsuits, or threats thereof. China has made significant investments in establishing a presence in Myanmar's information environment. In 2020, PRC media engaged in content sharing with various state-run and private Myanmar media outlets. Additionally, China aims to influence Myanmar journalists by sponsoring forums, providing training, and facilitating travel. PRC media outlets also tailor entertainment content to suit Myanmar audiences through joint production efforts.
