Layer Scores

The Indicators have been classified by the stage of the influence process at which they occur. Some Indicators correspond to exposure to PRC influence, e.g. the presence of Confucius Institutes. Others test for pressure – such as visa denials to academics or journalists. Finally, some Indicators capture the effect of PRC influence, such as national policy changes in favor of PRC interests.
The individual Layer scores for each country are tallied and displayed via rankings.

Without having support from the government/locals events could not be held. [2nd respondent]: Not the political party, but UFWD has a strong influence on another essential part of Thai society. It’s evidence that UFWD uses Buddhist organizations as adjuncts to BRI in mainland Southeast Asia. Link The Mahachulalongkornrajavidyadaya University, Buddhist University in Thailand, have a good relationship with PRC Buddhist organizations, for example, Spead the Mahayana Buddhism project, a joint study program between Mahachula University and China Center for Cultural Exchange and International Studies, etc. Thai monks often participate in international conferences that PRC Buddhist organizations hold. First emerging in the 1990s, Chinese PSCs became more prominent after 2004, when 11 Chinese construction workers were killed in Afghanistan by the Taliban (China.org.cn, June 10, 2004). Following a series of subsequent incidents in East Timor, Chad, Lebanon, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Thailand, Haiti, and later Libya and Egypt, the necessity to protect Chinese nationals abroad became a more pressing necessity. These incidents involving Chinese nationals resulted in the rapid rise of the Chinese PSC industry.)
